Leaves are large 4-15 cm long and 2.5-7.5 cm wide and with or without hair; dull green-blue below and light green above. Catkins (flowers)appear long before leaves.

First Nations used the inner fibre to make ropes and in the spring wore the catkins for ornamentation. (Lauriault)

The leaves are nearly half as wide as long. (Lady Bird Johnson, 2005)
